Tsaligi (Cherokee) artist Jim Gunter, whose spirit name is “Standing Bare”, comes by his talent naturally. Untutored in man-made ways about art, Jim’s journey to become a gifted painter is a spiritual one that began after he made his very first medicine bag.

Before his natural ability as a painter emerged, Jim would etch stones using charcoal. A medicine man named Blue Hawk favored Jim with a naming ceremony after being gifted one of them. It was then that Jim received the spirit name “Standing Bear”. Although several years later and during a period of deep loss, Jim was shown that his native name is actually spelled “Standing Bare”.

At the time, he was literally standing bare before the Creator, stripped of all he held near and dear. As Jim tells it: “This is how I emerged from the silence and was called to paint on these stones. My life is forever changed!”
Since that time, Jim has used the name “Standing Bare”. Even so, Jim continues to paint as inspired by Spirit. His sacred rock art is only available as limited edition prints as each original painted stone is kept in his studio to honor the Creator’s gifts.

“I’m grateful to the Great Mystery, for the Good Red Road and Its Peoples” – Jim Gunter
