Jonathan Merrill Nelson 1952-2004

Jon Nelson was born in Queens, New York. He graduated from Hamilton College. He lived in the New York City area. He was art director for Firehouse Magazine for a time. In 1989 he moved to the South Carolina Lowcountry.

Here he had resumed painting after a 20-year hiatus. He painted the landscape of the coastal plains, with their wide prairies of marsh and soaring, vaulted sky.

The moon frequently appears in his work, luminous and changing appearance in its journey around the earth. Its influence on the tides is inexorable in its daily and monthly cycle, and he saw these constant variations that are inherent in this cycle akin to the roles that certain people play in our lives: children, parents, friends, and mentors, drifting in and out of day-to-day living, yet wielding a an undeniable power whether distant or close, whether for better or worse.

His work hangs in numerous private and corporate collections around the country. His paintings won many awards in the over 50 regional and national juried competitions they were show in. He was working on his master’s thesis when he passed away in 2004. A posthumous recognition of his work was selection and inclusion of the painting "Mirage" on the opening two-page spread of a South Carolina Social Studies textbook in use today. He was the husband and partner of artist Peggy Duncan.
A note about Edition sizes and print quality on Jon Nelson's giclee prints

Edition sizes represent the entire edition to be printed no matter the size of the print chosen. When the Edition is sold out there will be a very limited number of Artists' proofs (25) and that will be all. Each print is numbered and signed by the late artists' wife. Each is printed on a heavy 100% cotton paper with archival inks. With proper care and framing these should last 75 years without fading.

The only exception to Edition Size is the two-edition printing of "Horse Whispers". The Artist started a small size 14x9 print in edition of 150. Also the large size 24x16 print in an edition of 75.

Most prints can be printed on canvas if preferred for an additional small charge. Prints on canvas are also UV protected.
